Rental Requirements

At the time of booking your kayaks we will ask you to give some background regarding your previous kayak experience.  We are not trying to put you on the spot – this is done only to ensure you’ll receive the appropriate type of information during your 15-30 minute orientation session.  All renters must be able to demonstrate, on land, the proper technique for a self-rescue.

Essential Criteria

  1. People or parties wishing to rent kayaks must be able to adhere to all the criteria for guided tours as well as the following:
  2. People or parties wishing to rent equipment must prove their prior knowledge and use of the equipment through telephone or other personal (non-text, email, etc.) interviews and provide detailed background experience of paddling in open water. Verification is determined by the owner.
  3. Renters must file a float plan with SWCK before arrival in Sitka.
  4. Renters must carry all the same communication equipment as the SWCK guide.
  5. Renters must arrange adequate shore support either through SWCK or another verifiable entity.
  6. Renters must be able to make conservative decisions regarding their skills concerning potentially changing conditions and act accordingly.
