Did you ever wonder what a tidal rush looks like? Have you played in one in your kayak and want more? This adventure includes 3 different passes with significant tidal currents or rapids culminating with Surgis Rapids. Passing through these areas is a matter of timing and planning. Traveling through these areas when the tide is not moving, or “slack”, eliminates all or most of the current force.
A water taxi pick-up at the end of the trip is required. Stopping for a layover day at the rapid sites is an exciting way to spend the day playing in the current or simply watching from shore and marking the way the current changes direction, level and force.
The first pass we go through is an easy float on fast water that does not require any particular skill other than keeping an eye open for shallower water. The second pass or rapids require either careful timing to pass through at easy levels or some confidence in controlling your kayak. The 3rd tidal pass is the most challenging and turn- around or end- point of the adventure. It can be avoided altogether as the campsite is before the pass.
Paddling through this area is exciting for the experienced paddler but depending on the timing, a bit much for less confident persons. Because of the unique geography here it is possible to run through the rapids and then carry your boat 100 yards across a goose neck to get back to the little bay the camp is in. A day spent here, whether in your kayak or ashore enjoying the sites is well worth it and the fishing is excellent. It is possible to paddle through this area at slack tide and experience a little bit of the force before it increases through the tidal cycle. Experienced paddlers can continue making the dash, committing to the more challenging points in the tidal exchange.
As with all the adventures we partake in at SWCK, the scenery is stunning, wildlife abundant and water clear and clean.
Prices are based on the number of persons in your group multiplied by the length your trip. The larger your group, the greater the per person discount.
